The short answer: a data entry operator types and updates information in computer systems — customer details, invoices, stock, orders or records. Freshers usually earn around ₹10,000 to ₹16,000 a month. The job needs typing speed, accuracy and basic MS Excel, and many roles accept 12th pass candidates.

What does a data entry operator do?

  • Enters data from forms, bills or scanned documents into software or Excel
  • Checks records for mistakes and duplicates
  • Updates customer, product or stock details
  • Prepares simple reports in Excel
  • Scans, files and manages documents
  • Supports the back-office team with routine tasks

Data entry salary

  • Fresher: about ₹10,000–₹16,000 a month
  • 1–3 years' experience: about ₹14,000–₹22,000, more with advanced Excel
  • MIS executive (a common next step): higher pay for reporting and Excel skills

Warning: fake data entry jobs

"Online data entry from home, ₹30,000 a month, no experience" is one of the most common job scams in India. Watch for these signs:

  • A registration, software or "ID activation" fee
  • Form-filling or captcha work with a "penalty" if you make mistakes
  • An "agreement" that threatens legal action unless you pay
  • No company address, only WhatsApp or Telegram contact

Genuine data entry jobs are usually in an office, or remote with a known company that interviews you properly. Read how to identify a fake job offer before applying to any work-from-home role.

How to get a data entry job

  1. Take a typing test and put your speed on your resume, for example "Typing: 35 WPM, 98% accuracy".
  2. Learn basic Excel and add it to your skills.
  3. Make a simple one-page resume — see our resume guide.
  4. Apply to data entry and back office jobs on JobZeno in your city.
