How to Make a Resume for Freshers: Step-by-Step Guide with a Free Format
You can write a strong resume even without work experience. Here are the 7 sections you need, a simple format to copy, and the mistakes that get resumes rejected.

The short answer: a fresher's resume should fit on one page. Put your name and phone number at the top, then one or two lines on the job you want, followed by your education, skills and any work or projects you have done. Recruiters usually scan a resume in seconds, so a short, clean resume wins.
This guide walks you through what to write in each section, what to include when you have no experience, and the mistakes that get resumes rejected. At the end there is a simple format you can copy.
The 7 sections every fresher resume needs
- Name and contact details — full name, a mobile number that is always on, email and city. You do not need your full home address.
- Objective (two lines) — the job you want and what you bring. For example: "Looking for a telecaller role in Jaipur. Comfortable speaking with customers in Hindi and English."
- Education — latest qualification first, with board or college, year and marks.
- Skills — five to eight skills related to the job: MS Excel, typing speed, Tally, riding a two-wheeler, customer handling, languages.
- Experience, internships or projects — part-time work, helping in a family business, college projects or training all count for a fresher.
- Certificates and achievements — computer courses, NCC, sports, online courses.
- Short personal details — languages and, if asked, date of birth. Add a photo only if the job post asks for one.
What to write when you have no experience
This is the biggest worry for freshers. Instead of leaving the section empty, include:
- College or school projects — what you built, which tools you used and what you learned.
- Part-time or family work — running a shop counter, giving tuition, doing deliveries. These show you are responsible.
- Internships or training — even a two-week one.
- Volunteering — NSS, organising events, working with an NGO.
- Numbers wherever possible — "Taught 30 students" is stronger than "Gave tuition".
Tailor your resume to each job
Do not send the same resume everywhere. Read the job post and add three or four of its key words (such as "Excel", "field sales" or "two-wheeler") to your objective and skills — as long as they are true for you. The recruiter then sees at a glance that you fit the role.
| Job | What to highlight first |
|---|---|
| Telecaller / BPO | Languages, communication, typing speed |
| Delivery / Driver | Vehicle, driving licence, knowledge of local routes |
| Data entry / Back office | Typing speed (words per minute), MS Excel, computer course |
| Sales | Talking to people, any selling experience, languages |
| Retail / Store | Customer service, billing, willingness to work shifts |
8 mistakes that get resumes rejected
- Two or three pages — one page is enough for a fresher.
- Spelling mistakes — read it twice before sending.
- A wrong or switched-off phone number.
- An unprofessional email ID — create a simple one with your name.
- Colourful designs and a large photo — a clean, black-text resume works best.
- Skills you do not actually have — they get caught in the interview.
- Sending a Word file — always send a PDF so the layout does not break.
- A file name like "resume final new (2).pdf" — use Rahul-Sharma-Resume.pdf.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a fresher's resume be?
One page. Freshers have little work history, so a clear one-page resume is the most effective.
Should I add a photo to my resume?
Only if the job post asks for one. Otherwise a photo is not needed and takes up space.
What is the difference between a resume and a biodata?
A resume focuses on education, skills and work. A biodata includes more personal details such as date of birth and family, and is used mainly for marriage or some government purposes. For private jobs, send a resume.
How do I make a resume if I am 10th or 12th pass?
Use the same format: name, contact, objective, education, skills and any work you have done. List practical skills such as driving, languages, computer use or a trade like tailoring, cooking or electrical work.
Should I send my resume as Word or PDF?
PDF. A PDF looks the same on every phone and computer, while a Word file's layout can break.
