The short answer: BPO stands for Business Process Outsourcing. A BPO company handles work for other companies — such as customer calls, chat support, email replies or data processing. Freshers in Indian BPOs usually start around ₹12,000 to ₹22,000 a month, with higher pay for English or international processes and night shifts.

Domestic vs international process

  • Domestic: customers in India, usually Hindi, English or a regional language, mostly day shifts.
  • International: customers in the US, UK or Australia, fluent English needed, often night shifts, usually better pay and cab facility.

BPO salary for freshers

  • Domestic voice: about ₹12,000–₹20,000 a month
  • Non-voice (chat/email): about ₹12,000–₹18,000 a month
  • International voice: about ₹18,000–₹30,000 a month, sometimes with a night-shift allowance

Salary figures in this article are approximate monthly ranges seen in job posts across Indian cities in 2026. Actual pay depends on the city, company and your hours — always check the job post.

Many BPOs also pay performance incentives, attendance bonuses and provide PF, ESIC or health insurance. Ask about these during the interview.

Shifts and work conditions

  • Shifts are usually 9 hours including breaks, often rotational.
  • International processes commonly run at night Indian time.
  • Many companies give cab pick-up and drop for night shifts — confirm this before joining.
  • Work is measured by quality scores, call time and customer feedback.

The BPO interview

  1. HR round: introduction, why BPO, shift flexibility.
  2. Versant or language test (for English processes): speaking, listening, grammar.
  3. Typing test for non-voice roles.
  4. Operations round: a mock call or situation questions such as handling an angry customer.
